Nova Scotia Documentary Photography | Baby B’s Fresh 48

Never before had I had a client this overdue! Booking our time together, I figured we had plenty of time to photograph her fresh 48 and newborn session before I was to leave for Ireland two weeks after her due date. Well, the due date passed and I started to get nervous! Finally, this little guy decided to make an appearance 2 weeks after his due date, just one day before I was to leave.

As I packed up my bags for Ireland, I was sure to get all my gear together for our session, which was easiest to plan for on our way to the airport. It was a beautiful day and we even left a little early. I figured this was going to work out perfectly. I was actually going to be able to shoot this little guy before I leave! I was so excited!

There isn’t a lot of traffic in these parts of the world, especially on highways. But low and behold, of all days, this was going to be the day I run into a traffic jam. I could see the hospital for goodness sake! Oh my heart was just racing and beating out of my chest. Positive thoughts, I repeated to myself.

Finally, I arrived at the doorsteps of the hospital and raced through the halls. Luckily, from all of the time I spent sick there with Wes, I knew these halls very well. I walked in the room and this calm fell over me. The familiarity of these walls brought so much peace to me in this moment. To see this little family sitting there with so much joy brought tears to my eyes.

These clients were so awesome and understanding. I barely made our flight really without a minute to spare – I definitely laugh about this now! Unfortunately, I was unable to make their newborn session, however, I was lucky enough that one of my photographer friends, Kayla MacAulay, was able to step in and help out.  I told them I was going to make this session no matter what and I did. Boy, am I glad I did! The world seemed to be against this session, but in the end I got some of my most beloved client images.
